Our Home Command Centre

Organised spaces in our home sometimes change due to our needs changing or the current one is not working.  I wanted to create a quick drop for mail or items to be followed up for each family member, a place to stick some fave photos, birthday invites and certificates.

The second shelf of the bookcase I use for my handbag and hubby's lunchbox and the bottom basket holds our paper shredder and laminator.

Paperwork drop zone and a magnetic board for photos etc

Quick drop for paperwork for each family member

Cork board for invites and school timetable
Magnetic board for anything else

Charging station and drop zones for keys, hubby's wallet and sunglasses

It's quite rare to see the charging station empty. I just love how we have been able to hide all the cords and its fits in with the colour scheme. If you missed this post you can see it here

Charging Station for Iphone, Ipod & Ipad

I don't know what it's like in your home but ours is full of iphones, ipods and a ipad, getting charged by the laptop, on the kitchen bench and the stereo amplifier. I wanted to create a central area for charging technology, but I also did not want it to look to out of place. So on one of my recent visits to Ikea I came across the KVISSLE Cable management box. It was plain but I wanted it to go with our aqua home command centre (post to come on this :). I had a idea, why not spray paint the cork board top in aqua. I was really pleased with how it turned out. We had a spare 4 point adaptor that fitted nicely in the box. The next thing I wanted to tackle was to find power adaptors that had a USB point to save room in the box. The apple adaptors plus the cable are a little too high to fit the lid flush. I found adaptors with USB points at my local masters store here they are.

Here is how it looks without anything charging. You can push the adaptors back in the box if you don't want to see them. Now if only I had a Silhouette I could do a lovely vinyl label on the box.

It is working great and at least now I am not looking in 3 different places to find a item charging.

Do you have a charging station?

Fireworks Display

I don't know about you but I have always loved watching fireworks there is just something magical about them. Since having the boys the closest I have come to seeing fireworks is on TV. There was a festival on and they were going to have a fireworks display. We thought let's go and let the boys see  fireworks. When we told the boys they were excited, well expect for Joel (he doesn't like very loud noises). We made a deal with the boys, they needed to have a little afternoon sleep as it would be a late night. It was such a great deal that Brad and I got a afternoon sleep too....bliss!

I wanted to share with you today some photos that I took that night. Sorry it's a bit pic heavy.

So the verdict from the boys they loved the fireworks!!

New Playroom - Part 2

If you missed last week's post showing you our drop down desk click here.

I bought some white tubs for the bargain price of $5 each awhile ago and I still had some left over. I decided I could use them on top of the expedit to store some of the toys that are too big to fit in the expedit. But if you know me you would know I just couldn't stop there I had to design some toy labels as well.

New Playroom - Part 1

We decided to move our playroom, there were two reasons for this:

1.   To have Coby sleeping closer to everyone else
2.   The playroom will be much closer to our kitchen/living area

In the old playroom we had a cute little white table and chairs for the boys but it was really too small for 3 growing boys.

Old Playroom with small table

We needed somewhere where all the boys could sit down together to do artwork, puzzles, lego, drawing etc. We wanted a large work space but we didn't want to lose too much space, the new playroom is a bit smaller. So we came up with the idea of a desk that would fold up when not being used. We used a 820mm solid door which we painted white.

These latches hold the legs in place when the table is up

This latch holds the rest of the table up

The latch is up quite high so the kids can't get to it. My husband assures me that even if the kids sit on the table it will not come away from the wall. I guess he should know he is a builder lol.

Ottomans for playroom storage

These ottomans are great for extra seating and storage. When they have friends around they can all sit at the table, even hubby and I use them to sit on.

Next week I will show you the rest of the playroom.

Pantry Organisation

When I saw Martha Stewarts chalkboard labels I just knew I wanted them for our pantry. If things change or I move items around its very easy to rub out and change.

I bought some spice rack holders and a paper towel holder to free up some space in the pantry, my lovely hubby put them up for me. Don't forget to think of vertical space that you can utilise.

Mini Mudroom in a Cupboard

I picked up some white tubs from Officeworks for $5 each, they were such a bargain. I bought a couple well more like 12 of them, I just love love containers and baskets. When I brought them home my hubby just sighed and said "not more container"s. At this stage I didn't quite know what I was going to use them for but I knew I would find a use for them.

So fast forward a couple of weeks I had bought Brodie his school bag, I then realised that there was no way that it was going to fit in where the kids backpacks go currently. The below photo is from a post I did in February last year, you can see the post here. The basket on the far right was fine for 3 little backpacks but it wasn't going to big enough for a school bag and 2 backpacks.

Storage for kids shoes, hats and backpacks

I have always wanted to create somewhere for the kids to dump their backpacks, swimming bag and also have a home for items to be donated and items to be returned that was not visible.

One of the cupboards next to our front door was being used for the swimming bag, vacuum cleaner and just stuff and alot of the shelves were empty. I couldn't wait to put one of the tubs in there to see whether they would fit and lucky for me I could fit 2 side by side. I must admit I was quite happy with myself, I then worked out what I wanted to put in each tub. I designed some labels to put on the front of the tubs.

Tub Label

I couldn't take a photo of the whole cupboard I can't fit it all in.....so sorry but it's in 2 photos. Hint to hubby if you are reading this post I need a DSLR with a wide lens ;).

Mini Mudroom in a cupboard - Bottom 3 shelves
Mini Mudroom in a cupboard - Top 3 shelves

So here is a closer look at all the shelves and what the tubs hold.

Spare containers - You know I love containers and I always have some spare and this is where the smaller ones are kept.
Office Supplies - Spare office supplies e.g. paper, toner

Stackable Drawers

Archive - Any paperwork that I want to archive, when the drawer is full I will transfer to a archive box.
Stuff - Odds and ends that don't really have anywhere to go
Batteries - You guessed it batteries
Return - Any items that need to be returned to a shop, friends or family

I am sure I will come up with ideas to fill the other 2 drawers.

Donate - I put anything in here to donate when it is full I can take the tub and put it in the car and take to our local Op shop.
Bags - reusable shopping bags.

Swim - We have board shorts and towels that are only used for swimming lessons and these stay in this tub. As soon as these are washed and dried they are put straight back in this tub. This saves the hassle of running around trying to find everything on swimming days.
Brodie - School bag and backpack

Joel - backpack, kinder hat and raincoat for kinder
Coby - backpack

Coby - sunglasses & hats
Joel - sunglasses & hats
Brodie - school shoes & hats

I tried again to get it all in one photo but this is as close as I could get it so just try and imagine another 4 tubs on top of this photo :).

Mini Mudroom in a Cupboard

I have used the remaining white tubs in another space I have organised.  I will be sharing that with you soon.
